John Chaplin, son of John Chaplin and Ann Skinner, was born in July 1682 in James Island, South Carolina and married Phoebe Ladson, born on June 27, 1691, daughter of John Ladson and Mary Stanyarne in 1715. He died on February 3, 1752 in St Helena Island, South Carolina at the age of 69.

The Chaplins were early planters who acquired 300 acres on St. Helena Island in 1733. In time, they added to their holdings. In 17909 another John Chaplin, thte son of the first, owned 30 slaves. In 1825 John F. Chaplin filed tax returns showing that he owned 10 acres and 9 slaves in St. Helena Parish and 474 acres and 29 slaves in Prince William's Parish. The house has seen several renovations and additions.
