Land record, 21 Aug 1756: JONATHAN NORTON, planter, & MARY ANN his wife, to JOHN BARNWELL & JOHN FENDEN, JR., planters, as trustees ... whereas JOHN NORTON died intestate in 1705 & his children inherited the 960 a. divided into 9 equal parts; son JONATHAN receiving the S part of the 400 a. on St. Helena Island; & whereas the House of Assembly & several persons contributed money & material for building a chapel & vestry room on said island; now nearly completed; now JONATHAN places the 2 a., buildings & burial ground in the hands of certain trustees & their successors.
