Estate Inventory

A Saga of the South
Author: Edward P. Lawton
Published: N.p.: n.p., 1965.
p. 59.
The Chaplins' daughter, Mary Ann, married Jonathan Norton. We know very little about them except that they evidently both died the year before the Revolution started, in 1774. We have a copy of the inventory of Jonathan's estate, dated September 9, 1774; it was a considerable one in the money of that period, totalling nearly L8,800. Of this over L6,000 was given as the value of 22 Negroes. Nearly L800 represented stocks of sheep, hogs horses, cattle and oxen. Furniture was valued at about L200; two rowing canoes L150; wearing apparel L40; The Crop made & Unmade L700; and, of special interest, shoemaker's or tanner's tools and tanned and untanned leather L417. One would suppose that this tanning stock came down in Mary Ann's family, since her grandfather Stanyarne was listed on arriving in the Colony as a tanner.
